Nollig... and on the Backside of the Rhein
While Nollig doesn't look like much, it does offer a chance to show the quality of the Dimage 7 in action... even without the zoom.
Nollig is situated further down the Rhein River near the town of Lorch. It was also the departure point for my little detour from the Rhein.
Nollig is privately owned and not open to the public. The portion that remains is essentially a keep, and there is some evidence of outward walls that are now almost completely consumed by the vegetation.
The photo at left is a cropped enlargement of a distant shot. This demonstrates what the Dimage 7 can do, with details of the castle and the vineyards quite visible.
Below are two close up views of Nollig, one taken from the river in 2007 and the other (right) up close, both with the A100. In the first, the weather was misty, but some good detail can be discerned. Nollig has a wooden balcony between the keep and the ward, with a door going to each. There is also a picnic table (lower right in the left photo) for weary hikers to have a nice lunch. However, the castle is closed.
Below are two shots of my trip up the back roads towards Sauerthal, east of Kaub. The castle is the ruin Sauerburg, the photo on the left as seen from the south, and that on the right as seen from Sauerthal itself. I got temporarily lost in this little town, as what looked like the main road to Kaub instead took me to a dead end. After asking a local, I had to drive up a narrow back road, just wide enough for my little Renault, to get into Kaub. A wonderful little adventure!
