Liebenzell was built in the late 1100s, with the Bergfried and shield wall constructed between 1220-1230. Initially the castle was named for the lords of Eberstein, but in 1259, Ludwig von Liebenzell obtained the property, naming it for his family. In 1273 the site was used as a residence of the von Baden family, and by 1603 by the house of Wurttemberg. The castle was destroyed by the French in 1692 and remained a ruin until the 1950s when it was converted into a youth home.
The shield wall is 2.7 meters thick and 17.5 meters high. The towew is 8 meters across and 2 meters thick, while it is 32 meters high.
