A nice view of Katz from the opposite hills of the Rhein. To get this shot, I had to drive up the back side of the hills and find a place to park, then walk on some trails to the edge of the bluffs. I ran into an old lady who kindly gave some directions, and lo and behold... there it was! I took the shot as the sun was setting, but clouds had just intervened to eliminate the golden glow that was reflected on the castle walls.
Views below toward Rheinfels and the town of Sankt Goar. Unfortunately, weather and light conditions militated against getting a clean shot. On the left, 2005 and on the right 1979.
A friendly German couple that I ran into when finding the overlook to Katz and the Lorelei. Over the man's right shoulder is the Lorelei, while below is the campground both of us were staying at. This couple had walked up a trail along the slopes, while I had driven up the back. I don't know which way was actually faster... or easier!
Below, a few excellent views of Katz taken in 2007. The photo at lower right shows a close up of the residential quarters.
A view of Burg Katz in late afternoon from the Lorelei, 2007. If the tower looks as if it is leaning to the right, it is no optical illusion for it is. Castles, like any other structure, require maintenance and structural shoring. Towers are particularly sensitive to leaning due to the settling of the soil caused by the extensive weight of the stone stacked above in a concentrated area.
