A classic view of Katz taken in 1979 (the two shots below left), with the Lorelei in the background. Katz was at one time a convalescent home and privately owned... thus no visitors. Today, I believe it is a private residence of one of the members of the Katzenelnbogen family.
The photo below is another classic shot. To reach this location, one can take the footpath mentioned in the previous page and follow it up until you reach the overlook. The path will at one point take you away from the castle, but don't worry... it winds back around. This was the one time when my instincts failed me, and to get this shot I busted brush up the side of a very steep hill!
While I'm very careful to respect the privacy of castle owners, I simply couldn't resist a close up of the owner's car in the castle courtyard!
As you climb the trail, you will see interesting views of both the castle, and the scenery around, especially Rheinfels castle on the other side of the river, which Katz was connected to through the Katzenelnbogen family.
Below, the main gate to the castle. There is no admitance to visitors.
Katz is a magnificent castle and is well worth a stop and the hike to view it from various angles. The view is simply spectacular.
