Gutenfels and the Pfalz
I have been past the Pfalz so many times I've lost count.  Yet, I had NEVER actually gone inside of it.  On the surface it doesn't appear to be much, but now that I've gone into it, the Pfalz is worth the visit.

To get there, go to the east bank of the Rhein at Kaub and catch the small boat that will take you there.  The cost for the Pfalz and the boat are together, so you only pay one fee.  Once there, just remember to listen for the bell as the boat leaves, otherwise you might be there a little while longer!
The Pfalz has been restored nicely, and in the style of its early construction.  One of the levels around the center courtyard is closed, but you can still go up into other walkways and see almost the entire structure.
The central keep is surrounded by the courtyard, with only walkways from the upper levels to allow entrance.
The photos right show examples of the restoration work and its quality.  The Pfalz, while having some areas for basic living, was not a residence.  It was a fortified toll station, and nothing more.

Despite maintaining the medieval appearance of the structure, one can still see things like the fire extinguisher (to the left) within!
