The essential structure of Hohenbaden was built sometime between 1073 and 1130 (one source states 1190) under the Markgrafs Hermann II and III. Under Bernhard I, the castle was expanded with the addition of the southern palas and the lower castle. The palas, named the Bernhardbau, had walls between 3.6 to 3.8 meters thick and rose four stories. The eastern palas and chapel were erected under Jacob I between 1431-1453, with the former completed in 1437. The Vorburg was built around the end of the 1400s. In 1479, the castle was the residence of the Markgraf von Baden.
The Bergfried, or tower, was 7.2 meters across with walls a modest 1.6 meters thick. It was 16 meters in height, but the entrance was situated quite close to the ground, being only 3 meters above the base. By the close of the 1500s, the castle began its slow decay from lack of maintenance and soon became a ruin.
