Also known as Alt-Eberstein, Ebersteinburg was first mentioned in 1197 as Castrum Eberstein, but the shield wall predates 1100. This wall is 3.6 meters thick and 10 meters high.
The keep is 7.5 meters across and dates from the 1300s, having walls 1.7 meters thick and being 13 meters high.
In 1288, the castle was passed on to the Margrave von Baden. However, the building of a new and more comfortable castle near Gernsbach in the 1300s (Eberstein) led to the sale and later abandonment of Ebersteinburg. By 1573, the castle was completely abandoned and was used as a quarry by locals. By the beginning of the 1800s it was largely in ruins.
The castle was once the residence of both the Graf von Eberstein and the Margrave von Baden over the course of its history.
